A structure model of the icosahedral (I) phase in the Mg-Al-Zn alloy has been proposed. The formation of the quasicrystal and the transformation from quasicrystal to crystal of the alloy were computer simulated. The origin of long-range orientational order in a quasicrystal can naturally be understood on the basis of these results.
